What I don't understand is why some people are willing to defend the indefensible and often look like an idiot defending the obvious idiocy.

It's pretty common, really. We most often see it in relation to religion. Blatant examples like pedophile priests. But even declaring the bible as some tome of great morality when it includes EX 21 (rules for slavery...also rife in Deuteronomy, and I think even a few other books like Numbers). It is indefensible, but I've heard apologists try (and fail) to defend it.

It seems that when people believe strongly enough, they can overlook and/or rationalize almost anything.
