In a post Wednesday morning on Truth Social, Trump blamed California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, for depriving the LA region of water because he wanted to protect “an essentially worthless fish called a smelt.” Trump chided Newsom for not approving a water restoration declaration that doesn’t exist, per Newsom’s office. He also implied that protections for the delta smelt — a small fish species found only in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta, an expansive wetland in Northern California — caused some fire hydrants to run dry in parts of LA. (Earlier this week, fire hydrants in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood ran dry, not because the city had no water but because of water pressure and other infrastructure issues.)

This isn’t the first time that Trump has bad-mouthed this fish. For nearly a decade now, the incoming president has claimed that he can solve California’s incredibly complex water problems by simply undoing regulations designed to help the delta smelt skirt extinction, as E&E News’s Jennifer Yachnin has reported. Those problems are not rooted in drought, Trump claims, but in Democratic rules that restrain private interests. In reality, rising temperatures have made California’s droughts even dryer.

In California, today marks the start of the new “water year,” the date water managers use to mark the end of the dry season and the beginning of the wet. The California Department of Water Resources (DWR) and U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) are kicking off this new water year by cancelling the fall flow protection for Delta Smelt — once one of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta’s most common fish — and now its rarest.

According to the current state and federal Endangered Species Act permits, DWR and Reclamation are required to release a pulse of water through the Delta to the San Francisco Bay in September and October to improve habitat conditions for the listed Delta Smelt.

Explaining to partisan cultists the programs to reestablish populations of indicator species would be a wasted of time and effort.

Trump is pandering to the large corporate farmers who don't give two shits about the California environment. They've decimated the ground water in the Salinas and Central valleys, and now they want to decimate the rivers. It's republicans, farmers with private jets with Victor Hansen Davis as a mouthpiece; ironically, they're the same guys whose massive operations will flounder if undocumented migrant workers are swept up in a mass deportation program. They're the guy who want the big Trump corporate tax cuts. They're the guys who got the big subsidies when Trump did tariffs and commodity exports ground to a halt. Small farmers who got crushed economically committed suicide in record numbers during Trump's first 4 years of golf on the taxpayers dime.
