The speech he made immediately after being convicted was brazen, full of lies, refusal to accept responsibility for what he had done. Most people understand that that sophistry was invoking 'hell' and 'devil' etc was utter bullsh!t

Is he really so stupid he doesn't understand that what he did was illegal?

It is all about firing up his base, fund raising off their stupidity and getting elected so he can continue his life long love of grifting and cheating.
