15 years ago, a friend's mom who I had power of attorney over, sent 2000$ via Zelle to a sbag thief , because she didn't want to " bother me".
After that, all four people I had power over, I kept 2k in their checking account, I had control over the rest. IF they needed to make a major purchase, I moved the money into the checking accounts to pay for it. That's the only way to protect the elderly.
