The energy crisis may force drivers in the 'best country in the world' to 'think twice' about electric vehicles ' here are 3 big plays to gas up your portfolio
https://finance.yahoo.com/news/winter-coming-best-...

And here are two of the reader comments to follow...(I did remove political finger pointing from both comments) Gotta love the comments :)

Jeff:
You people do realize that the majority of electric cars charge during off-peak hours? They don't burden the grid to any degree near what air conditioning does. Study after study after study confirms that the long-term use of EVs dramatically reduces the greenhouse gases that are killing all of us. Would you rather be alive? Or dead?

Human Lab Rat replied:
You do not realize that the off-peak hours is also when the sun does not shine. So, solar power is not producing. During those hours when the sun does not shine or cloudy rainy days, the electricity providers have to draw electricity from more non-renewable energy.

What do you mean EVs don't burden the grid as much as ACs do? The only reason is because less people have EV cars than ACs. Most home car charging systems are 240V just like ACs.

If you increase people's electricity consumption to be 5 to 10X more with the advent of mandates forcing people to buy EV cars, electric heaters, electric water heaters, electric landscape equipment, electric everything, on a strained power grid with energy shortages, it is a recipe for complete failure.

'think twice' about electric vehicles ...

This is the world-wide engineering challenge of our generation, and it goes far beyond powering vehicles. I'm not a greenie, and I grew up in the west Texas oil patch, but I see tremendous geopolitical benefits in transitioning away from hydrocarbon energy. The key to solving this challenge that will satisfy everyone (except oil producers) is finding a suitable zero-emission base load energy source. That requires innovative thinking. Here is a news article about one very promising path from MIT:

Tapping into the million-year energy source below our feet

Saw this article and thought about this thread.

More than 90% of vehicle-owning households in the United States would see a reduction in the percentage of income spent on transportation energy'the gasoline or electricity that powers their cars, SUVs and pickups'if they switched to electric vehicles.

And more than 90% of households that replace gas-powered vehicles with EVs would also reduce the amount of climate-warming greenhouse gases they generate, according to a new University of Michigan study.

However, more than half of the lowest-income U.S. households (an estimated 8.3 million households) would continue to experience high transportation energy burdens, defined in this study as spending more than 4% of household income on filling the tank or charging up.
