The GOP has already been investigating for six months and have received all the documents and information they have requested so it is not clear what else they will get from this.

They'll get a permission structure for people who dislike Trump but want to vote Republican (whether those voters are Republican or right-leaning independents) to vote for Trump for President. Those folks have reservations about Trump, because they think he's a bad guy. If you can convince them that Biden's also a bad guy, then they can vote for the bad guy that at least matches up with their partisan preference. They are able to avoid the dissonance that comes with voting for a bad guy over a good guy just because you want an "R" in the White House.
