But a funny thing happened to Trump’s attempt to hand Ukraine over to his comrade in thuggery: the war has turned in Ukraine’s favor. The fighting remains a gruesome slugfest, but Ukraine’s superior flexibility and capacity for innovation have gradually given it the upper hand in the drone warfare that increasingly shapes combat. In fact, Ukraine is so proficient at drone warfare that the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Saudi Arabia — which are facing drone attacks as a consequence of Trump’s disastrous Iran war — have signed agreements to draw on Ukrainian technology and expertise.

Zelenskyy, it turns out, does have quite a few cards, while Trump has far fewer cards than he imagined.

Before Trump, we were also a nation almost universally regarded as essential: Nations believed that they needed access to U.S. banks to do business, access to U.S. markets to prosper, access to U.S. weapons to defend themselves. But by breaking decades’ worth of international agreements — not to mention threatening allies and betraying Ukraine — Trump quickly forfeited the world’s trust. By failing so spectacularly against Iran, a far weaker military power, Trump has dispelled much of the world’s fear.

And now the fact that the world is managing economically despite Trump’s tariffs, while Ukraine is surviving despite Trump’s attempt to cut it off at the knees, has revealed that we are much less essential than everyone assumed

Yep, Krugman nailed it.

I also read a short article in the NYT a few days ago. Hezbollah has been using fiber optic drones so Israel is unable to jam them with radio waves. Hezbollah has killed 10 IDF personnel since April using the drones. Israel reached out to Ukraine for help. Ukraine said they might be able to help, but they could use some defensive help from Israel.

Everyone, except MAGA, realizes that Trump is only looking out for himself. Not to mention that he is ignorant and totally unreliable.

We are watching Everything Trump Touches Dies in real time.

Fiber optic drones? WTF? Ok, they really ARE connected to the operator with a fiber optic cable, yet somehow still have decent range. Incredibly thin fiber they must use! But I assume they don't do well in areas with a lot of obstacles that can snag the fiber...

A fiber optic drone is an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), usually a first-person view (FPV) loitering munition, which uses an optical fiber as its primary guidance and teleoperation link. These drones usually have fiber optic cables between 5 and 20 km (3.1 and 12.4 mi) long, although prototypes with up to 50 km (31 mi) range have been developed.[1] Fiber optic drones are impossible for defence forces to jam and very difficult to detect, as they are small and constructed from lightweight materials and have no thermal or radio signature.[2][3] They are relatively inexpensive to produce.[4][5]
...
An operator controls the drone via fiber optic cable connection. Ultra-thin fiber optic wire provides connection between the drone and the operator and spools of fiber optic wire unwind as the drone flies to its target.[4][6] Advantages of these drones include immunity to jamming as compared to traditional radio drones,[7] higher data rates from the drone, even from locations where radio contact is poor, with the signal not revealing operator's or drone's location by radio direction finding,[8][9] and less power required to communicate, so they can be used to idle on the ground for ambushes.[10]
