I won't NOT vote for someone just because they profess belief in a deity. Most people have some belief. But it is a significant strike against them. If they seem to make it a major campaign point, it becomes disqualifying to me. We have a few campaign signs up that I see when I'm driving. If any of them mentions "god" (which a few do), automatic "I'm not voting for that one".
As you say, separation of church and state. If they're campaigning with 'god', I have no confidence they will maintain that separation in their governance.
