Lethal injection gives an impression (whether false or not) of being less barbaric, of being a medical procedure, of being a more quiet and peaceful death. It doesn't outwardly mutilate the body, it doesn't spray blood everywhere, it doesn't involve any overt obvious violent acts.
I was surprised to find that AI says firing squad might be the most reliable:
Firing Squad: Direct rupture of the heart causes an immediate drop in blood pressure, leading to unconsciousness within seconds, minimizing the duration of conscious pain compared to chemical or electrical methods.
But this method still has several problems: shooters who miss the heart, or who have a moral problem with taking a life, and of course, some mutilation of the body.
Seems like you could eliminate the trouble with human shooters by using a machine that does the targeting (via x-ray) and firing?
