Frederich Merz said today:
My absolute priority will be to strengthen Europe as quickly as possible so that, step by step, we can really achieve independence from the USA,” Merz said. “I never thought I would have to say something like this on a television program. But after Donald Trump's statements last week at the latest, it is clear that the Americans, at least this part of the Americans, this administration, are largely indifferent to the fate of Europe.”

Yep, I'm happy he says "at least this part of the Americans, this administration." Means he's a sharp fellow, but I don't see any easy recovery from this. We've shot ourselves in the foot - and China has to be happy. This is going to be a tough four years.

Donald Trump shot us in the foot, though American voters certainly put him in the position to do so.

lol at this guy.
If Trump felt that way we would have packed up all our stuff in Germany and sent it home…during his first term.

Yes, Trump did the foot shooting. But the US electorate chose him after he told us all he would shoot us in the foot. Is it really Trump’s fault, or the voters’ fault?
Personally, I put it at the bloody feet of the voters.

https://thedailyeconomy.org/article/germanys-elect...Germany’s Election Reveals the Peril of Pursuing ‘Green’ Dreams
Five years of no growth and few jobs have fractured the coalition government. Net-zero fantasies turned out to be a self-inflicted nightmare. This is what brought the socialists in Germany down.
Until recently, this would have seemed incredible. In the early 1990s, Germany’s per capita Gross Domestic Product (GDP), adjusted for inflation and differences in living costs, was equal to that of the United States, an incredible achievement for a country whose economy was obliterated during World War II. The jewel in West Germany’s economic crown was its manufacturing sector, which specialized in high-quality products made by a highly capitalized, highly productive, highly paid workforce. This accounted for 19.9 percent of German GDP in 1997 compared to 16.1 percent in the United States: By 2021, while manufacturing had fallen to 10.5 percent of United States’ GDP, it still accounted for 18.7 percent in Germany. And what is it now?
Germany’s political class thought that it could have an industrial economy based on pre-industrial sources of energy like wind and solar. For a time, Russian natural gas allowed them to live that fantasy and lecture those who did not share it. The fantasy is now over, and it turns out that switching your economy to pre-industrial energy sources switches you back to a pre-industrial economy. Germany’s energy-intensive industrial production is now at a level even below those it fell to during the pandemic.
The country hasn’t seen significant economic growth in five years and 2024 was the second year in a row where Germany’s economy actually shrank. Yup. Bbbbut it must all be about Trump, right?
Hardly.
On November 1, FDP leader and finance minister Christian Lindner called for tax cuts and a halt in new regulations, and opposed new spending, including on action against climate change. The SPD and Greens branded this “provocation” and on November 6, Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) dismissed Lindner, and the FDP quit the coalition, leaving a minority government.Nah, not so much.

Why doesn't President Trump or Biden or Bush on the night of their election whine about Europe and their level of care for the United States?
Why don't Americans stand up and whine "Them Europeans won't take care of us anymore"
They're been building infrastructure and trains and free health and cheaper college while the Americans have provided so much for them.
How about they pay for it? IS it so radical to say 'Hey Sheeple, you're doing ok. I've helped you for 50 years. I'm sort of poor now and I can't even afford to fix my driveway. How about you put more towards me protecting your house"?
Good ol Sheeple Liberals just can't stand Mooch Europe having to do more.
BTW Trump was President in 2016-2020----- why didnt' Europe get "more independent" from the USA then?
Anyhow, good luck to Racist Europe. Either they get their act together, and they get what they deserve by having to spend blood and treasure. OR they don't, and they get what they deserve from their 'exploding' populations within and from the likes of Russia or Iran.
Either way Sheeple, The LEader's punishment has arrived where *even* you can see it now.
Still too smug to admit it though.
One caveat: If Trump goes too far don't worry, your Military-Industrial Complex friends will see to it, that he gets a sore throat or something like that.
BTW - someone remind Europe that Europe's problems don't belong to the whole world. Humanity doesn't revolve around the most racist and colonizing force known to mankind.

"indifferent"
I think Merz was being generously diplomatic. Trump is openly hostile to the fate of Europe.

Trump has made it clear that he admires Putin and would love to emulate the Russian kleptocratic rule by a dictator and his corrupt oligarchs.
