Of course they're authoritarians. The believe a deity handed them a guidebook for living, and that they are supposed to force it on everyone else. Perhaps that's a bit of an overgeneralization, but it's largely true. They then transfer that "moral authority" to whomever they think speaks for their deity, and follow what that person says.

That's the basis of an authoritarian system: one guy sets the rules, often citing divine authority. Doesn't matter if it's someone like Huckabee or Johnson, or an ayatollah. Different flavors of the same thing.
