The Food and Drug Administration is suspending a quality-control program for testing fluid milk and other dairy products after the termination and departure of 20,000 employees of the Department of Health and Human Services.

The FDA this month also suspended existing and developing programs that ensured accurate testing for bird flu in milk and cheese and pathogens like the parasite Cyclospora in other food products.

Effective Monday, the agency suspended its proficiency testing program for grade “A” raw milk and finished products, according to the email sent in the morning from the FDA’s division of dairy safety and addressed to “Network Laboratories”.

You made me look it up. Thanks. It's a great idea that is the antithesis of break things fast.

This could be a disaster for the dairy farmers, I know I’ll stop drinking milk or any other product without government oversight. I have relatives and many more acquaintances with dairy farms, cheese and meat processing in addition to others on the inspection side. I’ve heard enough horror stories form multiple inspectors to know the value they provide. I’d rather live in the US with less taxes than most of the of the developed countries with similar controls than a third world country with lower taxes but you can’t trust what you are eating.

Me, too. I'm always aghast when people starting talking about "red tape". Mostly because people don't ask the question "why is that red tape here?".

Sure, sometimes it is obsolete. Makes no sense. Other times, it's a reason that may be invisible now because it made disappear whatever it was designed to prevent.

We aren't big milk drinkers. But we do use cheese on occasion. If there will be little or no oversight to the US dairy industry, we'll buy imported. Europe has better standards -in general- than we do anyway. We already buy Kerrygold butter (Ireland), or Kirkland (Costco - New Zealand).

Actually, in some form, it existed as far back as 1906, but it's scope was extremely narrow, and penalties were tiny. Elixir sulfanilamide changed that. Almost 100 years later, people wonder why it is there. But we'd miss is -eventually catastrophically- if it wasn't.
