The week's question
In March 2025, in the thread "Re: OT, out", Umm asked the members: "Do you think it is because America is made up of magical soil that makes businesses based in America magically profitable?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

I could mention several names of Dems, but I'll just go with Al Franken. He's out. Probably shouldn't have been, but his own party ousted him. There are more examples. Reps very seldom turn on their own. They excuse much worse behavior.

I'll also mention Biden. I didn't watch the debate. But I know a LOT of Dems said "WTF, get someone else".

I just don't think that this stems from delusion.

Not all of it. Some don't seem to care. His hardcore supporters cheer him on. But I think often Reps are lying to themselves. That, or they are just heinous people. Which I don't believe most of them are**. They're deceived and/or lying to themselves that he's a great POTUS doing great things. It's only when it touches them that they say "hey, wait a sec!" (like the Trumpie whose Russian wife got swept up...apparently he thought the immigration thing only applied to brown people).

I'm reminded of the ACA. Maybe because I mentioned Franken above. People on both sides, when presented with features of the ACA, would say "that's a great idea". Then you would tell them it's in the ACA, and they were "no, Obamacare is bad" even after they agreed with pretty much all of its provisions. They were lying to themselves (or call it cognitive dissonance, if you prefer).

**Some are, like the KKK and neo-NAZIs, and the "you will not replace us" tiki-torchers. But most aren't. Most are just people who are wrong, like I used to be when I was a Republican. ;-)
