https://twitter.com/nancycordes/status/17124894837...CBS News has learned that the US reached a 'quiet understanding' with Qatar not to release any of the $6b in Iranian oil money that was transferred as part of a U.S.-Iranian prisoner swap. This news comes as the US and Israel scrutinize Iran's role in funding and training Hamas.Hmmm. Maybe money IS fungible after all.

Good to hear, if true.
But why quiet? Biden should be shouting this with a bullhorn so it clear to all would be troublemakers that the US has no problem going all corn-pop on them.

He just did. You think CBS News - a news-gathering division of an entertainment company and not a national intelligence agency - finds out about this so quickly unless someone in the Administration told them about it? That's a bullhorn in international diplomacy circles.
I expect the U.S. wants some plausible deniability on this, while making it crystal clear to Iran that we're behind it. That give Iran the ability not to escalate the matter. If Biden makes the announcement, Iran has to officially react - the U.S. would be officially reneging on its prior commitments. If CBS News makes the announcement, Iran can backchannel vent their anger to the U.S. and Qatar. Of course, Iran can choose to react officially and publicly anyway - but this gives them the option to engage a little more, well, diplomatically.

https://twitter.com/nancycordes/status/17124894837...More: Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo conveyed this 'quiet agreement' to House Democrats in a closed door mtg on Cap Hill this morning, per a source in the room.
As
@PunchbowlNews
first reported, Adeyemo also told them that the money 'isn't going anywhere anytime soon.'

Nothing like reneging on a deal to ensure trustworthiness.
I guess that's the last prisoner swap for a while...

Interesting...but close to the same thing? If you tell the entire House Democratic delegation (and not just the Foreign Relations Committee), then you're basically telling the press. But still not making an official announcement, which is the key.

I hey what you're saying. In my minds eye, the only way I could make sense of the $6 billion, is if it was incentivizing returning to the nuclear agreement. But the Biden Admin insists they're separate. I suppose it isn't wise to acknowledge what they're up to? Or am I reading in too much because it doesn't make sense to me otherwise?
