The week's question
In March 2025, in the thread "Re: OT, out", Umm asked the members: "Do you think it is because America is made up of magical soil that makes businesses based in America magically profitable?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

A cool breakthrough in biology regarding the evolution of life on this planet. Made in a cheap motel room due to the Felon trying to defund science.

Could have posted this on the science board, but this is also -presently- US policy.

nytimes.com - Motel science discovery

In the Journal of Phycology, Dr. Van Etten and her colleagues describe their motel-room find: two new species of a single-celled organism called Paulinella, a scaly, grenade-shaped microbe with sausage-shaped green lumps inside. Their discovery brings the world’s known total of photosynthetic Paulinella species to six.

What makes Paulinella important to biologists? Almost all complex photosynthetic life on Earth, from redwood trees to ferns to algae, traces back to an event 1.5 billion years ago. That’s when a single-celled organism engulfed a photosynthetic bacterium, turning it into a kind of energy-generating packet — what scientists call an “organelle.” But two decades ago, biologists discovered that this photosynthetic merger had happened a second time, in Paulinella, about 100 million years ago.

We really should be funding science. This anti-intellectualism that is taking hold of our society is going to have dire consequences as we fall further behind other nations in advancing science and technology. Education is not a liberal conspiracy. It's securing the future of our nation.
