There was a point when President McKinley slapped tariffs on Canada in an attempt to force Canada to become the 45th state.

There was a point when President McKinley slapped tariffs on Canada in an attempt to force Canada to become the 45th state.

I think this was done when McKinley was in the House of Representatives and the Republicans, championed by McKinley, pushed through these egregious tariffs.

As a result, Americans suffered through high inflation (1890 style) and the Democrats crushed the Republicans in the next election.

If history doesn’t repeat itself, let’s hope it rhymes.
