2023 is now in the books, and what an outstanding year for the bulls, especially the Nasdaq 100. The bulls were also firmly in control in 2020 and 2021, whereas the bears had their year in 2022.

Here's how the various index ETFs and Berkshire did this year.

        2023
ETF Return Description
----------------------------------------
QQQ 54.8% Nasdaq 100
QQQE 33.7% Nasdaq 100 Equal Weight
SPY 26.2% S&P 500
BRK.B 15.5% Berkshire Hathaway B shares
RSP 13.7% S&P 500 Equal Weight

Let's also look back at how the above investment choices did over the past 5 and 10 years.

Performance: 2019 - 2023
5-year
ETF CAGR $100,000 grew to
----------------------------------------
QQQ 22.4% $274,340
QQQE 17.5% $223,804
SPY 15.6% $206,497
RSP 13.6% $188,931
BRK.B 11.8% $174,679

Performance: 2014 - 2023
10-year
ETF CAGR $100,000 grew to
----------------------------------------
QQQ 17.7% $507,850
QQQE 13.4% $350,411
SPY 11.9% $308,623
BRK.B 11.6% $300,827
RSP 10.1% $262,391

How did you do this year? How are you positioning your portfolio for next year?

Wishing you all a prosperous year ahead.

up 14% or 2023. Not bad considering I have about 35% in Vanguard MM. Risk free 5+% is fine with me and helps dampen the volatility. Most of the rest is in Large CAP US stocks, mostly index funds and a few single company stocks. As long as MM stays above 4.5% of so, I am slowing trimming stock and adding to MM through 2024. I do very little buying and selling in my investments, maybe three or four transactions a year.

Good luck to us all.

Yep, that's my thinking, too. I retired early from corporate America in 2020, even though I was never a highly paid executive. This was thanks to living below my means, maxing out my 401K directly into a Vanguard Index fund for 20+ years, accumulating a bunch of RSUs from my company, and juicing my returns by following the Mechanical Investing board and Saul's board.

I now have 20% of my liquid assets in Schwab's money market fund paying a 5% APR monthly. The rest is mostly in index funds, some Dividend King type stocks, and a dozen or so large cap and mid cap tech stocks.

Good luck to all in 2024.

Here are my results for 2023

          1M 3M 1Y 3Y 5Y
tecmo +2.78% +10.32% +30.39% +11.79% +18.45%
SPY +4.54% +11.69% +26.29% +10.00% +15.69%

US Index 27%
MSFT 16%
BRK 15%
Global Index 15%
GOOG 9%
AAPL 5%
Other 4%
TD Bank 2%
DG 1%
AMZN 1%
DIS 1%
CASH 0%

Another year of index beating returns, which is the goal.

I posted elsewhere that my US Index holdings are a mix of

SPY : 60%
RSP : 20%
QQQE : 20%

I traded less than typical this year, the DG investment and adding to GOOG were the primary trades. Sitting on essentially 0% cash, which is unusual but in hindsight it was a good year to be fully invested - especially in DG and GOOG which have turned out very well for me.

BTW: My general objective is to beat the SPY by "a few points" each year. The big drag on the portfolio this year were the Global Index funds - which were up on average around 10% and BRK which was up 15%. It was a strange year that I was able to beat the index with 30% of my portfolio under performing by a significant amount.

Well done! I was +18% for 2023. Pretty well pleased. Portfolio:

70% BRK
11% VOO
6% AAPL
2% GOOGL

Then (descending) MKL, BAC(just sold), AMZN,JPM, MSFT, AXP, QQQE

3.5% in MM

Quiet trading- Small additions were made to BRK, GOOGL & AXP.
