If the Feds really want to do something useful, shoot down a few mystery drones over the ocean, recover and see what exactly their capabilities are. Another suggestion, keep one of the military super duper AWACs or some such in the air for a week or two and determine where these things are being launched from. If from out at sea, send in the Coast Guard or Navy to seize some vessels.

I’ve heard one plausible explanation about the drones and it came from the Mayor of some town in New York after being briefed on it.
He said the drones were feds and that they were airborne sensor platforms. Supposedly a container with medical equipment was delivered to New Jersey but either at the destination or somewhere along the way it was broken into and its contents stolen. The medical equipment inside contained radioactive material.
The drones, again according to this Mayor, are sensor platforms looking for emissions from the equipment. That’s why the airings are moving around; they’re supposedly tracking something.

They somehow managed to give the dumbest possible explanation they could - "We have no idea whose they are, but there's nothing to worry about". All the boneheads needed to say was, "These drones belong to the federal government, and they're part of an experimental program to see how they can operate in urban areas" and leave it at that.

Actually, I’m with you on this one.
Even though I think these drones are hobbyists playing around, I’m shocked that we don’t have a military drone response, including for micro-drone swarms. What the hell are we waiting for?
And while I’m at it, we should have a Secretary of Cyber Security (or something like that) IMNSHO. This should include protecting our infrastructure (including IT), financial systems, and individuals from having assets stolen/destroyed via cyber activity. I understand a lot of this is done by private companies, but I think it needs coordinated oversight for national security reasons.

It's a core problem with social media, which incentivizes "just asking the question" or spreading a conspiracy theory, but does
not incentivize reaching out to local officials and getting the confirmation that the thing that someone "heard that somewhere before." So people who get their news from social media are very likely to have heard the rumor, but not the official statement explaining why the rumor isn't true.

The feds simply state what they are up to, which in the context of this thread is searching for a lost medical radiation source that poses no immediate threat to the public but cannot be left laying around in public. Speaking of keeping up, you might want to go back and re-read Dope's conspiracy theory. The radioactive devices in his fairy tale were stolen, not lost. That means perps.
And if you make public that you're looking for radioactive sources as you suggest, most common folk won't know, but the perps who stole the radioactive items will know they're being hunted from above.
