In the past people would be friendly towards each other with completely different political ideas, and discuss their ideas together. In the present, particular the US public environment, there can be a lot of rudeness between people with different political ideas, and I empathise completely with you for wanting that to disappear and extremely agree that such rudeness should be unacceptable.

In theory I'd prefer to have more political boards to artificially remove this redness, but rather, encourage people with opposing views to interact better.

Again, I would encourage everyone to discuss ideas together, but not attack each other or make insinuations. Discuss only the idea, and don't press, or dig, too much once you have tried to make a point continually without it being understood. Above all, be respectful to each other.

Finally, use the ignore feature (click the unhappy face) against posters being continuously rude. It is highly effective.
