When my first avenue of inquiry hit a dead end (equipment limitations), my advisor started me on gamma ray bursts. I didn't get far before I bailed on my PhD, and went to work in industry. But I still like to keep tabs on this sort of thing.
Gamma ray bursts don't generally last this long, which is why the wrote the article about this one.
BOAT was pretty epic. Highly unusual. Happened well after I left my graduate program.

Lightning detectors in India and Germany picked up signs that the Earth's ionosphere was perturbed for several hours by the burst, though only mildly,[36][16][4] as well as an enormous influx of electrically charged particles...
Mind you...this was at a distance of 2.4B ly. And it perturbed our ionosphere in a detectable way. Enormous, staggering energy. If one of those were to go off in our general neighborhood, who knows what would happen to our little planet.
