As long as we're talking about immigration and the southern border, Jim Jordan led republican members of Congress to the Arizona border with Mexico while the president was making his historic visit to the war zone in Ukraine. Jordan's group was told that around 4,000 immigrants cross the U.S. border near Yuma each day and their goal was to shine a spotlight on all those illegal immigrants easily crossing into America.
But Jordan and his convoy came up empty. They didn't spot a single illegal border crosser.
His stunt failed but enforcement measures are improving on the southern border, partly a result of new administration policies announced in January.
Immigration officials, however, say enforcement measures are working, pointing to statistics that show Border Patrol encounters between designated ports of entry in January were at their lowest level in nearly two years. U.S. Border Patrol encounters between southwest border ports of entry last month totaled 128,410, down 42% from the 221,675 reported in December 2022, according to a February report from the agency.Jordan, in an interview at the border, begrudgingly admitted that the numbers were "good" but characterized the 42% drop as a small step in the right direction.
