I'm wondering if Harris set up the power balance for the evening right off the bat. As they came on stage from their respective sides, she strode all the way across the stage, reaching Trump's podium about the same time Trump did. She stuck out her hand and introduced herself, basically forcing Trump into a handshake. She didn't give him the option of ignoring her.

I suspect this was planned on her part. A lesson learned from the debates with Clinton.

Most definitely planned. It surely rattled Trump for the entire 90 minutes. I'll bet he couldn't stop thinking about it. He's no doubt STILL stewing over it.
