Hegseth Ordered a Lethal Attack but Not the Killing of Survivors, Officials Say

Amid talk of war crimes, the details and precise sequence of a Sept. 2 attack on a boat in the Caribbean are facing intensifying scrutiny.

Admiral Bradley ordered the initial missile strike and then several follow-up strikes that killed the initial survivors and sank the disabled boat. As that operation unfolded, they said, Mr. Hegseth did not give any further orders to him.

The officials clarified the sequence of events amid the political and legal uproar that has followed a report in The Washington Post last week. It said that Admiral Bradley ordered the second strike to fulfill a directive by Mr. Hegseth to kill everyone. The reaction has included questions about whether Mr. Hegseth specifically ordered an execution of shipwrecked sailors in violation of the laws of war.

Item: Blaming it, if that's the word, on the Admiral is Hegseth's plausible deniability. I didn't tell him to do that, he did it all by himself."

Item: The Admiral is at least 50% likely to be on the right side politically anyway and they all know it. That's why he agreed to this story.

Item: He either gets a "full, free, and absolute pardon" from any war crimes ...or maybe he gets court martialed and good luck having Admirals convict an Admiral for making a "military decision while under fire" or they will simply stack the panel with friendly officers. They won't convict and everybody goes home.

Item: There is another body in the Hague, the ICC, etc. I maintained, in the full conversation, that we wanted to bring the charges rather than them, try him, give him a medium light sentence, then pardon him after say - 90 days, reinstate his pension, etc. Wanted to maintain control of it and keep the Euros out.

None of the information being leaked about this incident can be assumed to be fully reliable.

Jumping to conclusions is good sport, but why don't we wait until all the evidence is out before drawing final conclusions.
