Turning the clock back to 1912. Originally, the enactment of the income tax, was offered with a reduction in tariffs. The thinking was that tariffs were unfairly born by lower income people, so dialing back the tariffs, and introducing an income tax, was seen as a way to more equitably spread the burden. Of course, for 45 years now, the mob has been fed the notion that continuously increasing amounts of money need to be showered on the rich, even if at the expense of the rest of us. The obvious end point, is replacement of the progressive income tax, with a regressive tax, like heavy tariffs, or a national sales tax, like the "fair tax" that Mike Huckabee was shilling for.
