Yes. I think this was fairly obvious from the beginning - the question was and is, why did Buffett fall in love with this idea DESPITE all the indications that he was dealing with the kind of people that he has scrupulously avoided?

Interesting question, my guess is he liked the economics and understood the business. They own difficult to replace stations by the interstate highway. Buffett was introduced to the family via Byron Trott who was also a selling shareholder. Trott has a long relationship with Buffett and probably trusted him.

Update:

https://apnews.com/article/warren-buffett-haslam-p...

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An attorney for the billionaire Haslam family called bribery allegations leveled by Warren Buffett’s company a “wild invention.

But a judge didn’t decide immediately whether those allegations will be resolved at a January trial that should help determine the multibillion-dollar price Berkshire Hathaway might have to pay the Haslams for the rest of the Pilot truck stop chain.

The Haslams and Buffett’s company are accusing each other of manipulating Pilot’s earnings this year to affect the price Berkshire would have to pay for the Haslams’ remaining 20% stake in the company if the family decides to sell.

I can't imaging Buffett pursuing litigation unless there was clear evidence...

The funny thing is that Haslam fully admits that he paid out huge cash bonuses for gaming the 2022 earnings higher in front of Berkshire's most recent tranche of equity purchases. They called it "Growth Partners Plan" and "Special Distribution Growth United" LOL

Berkshire's lawyers have decided not to have their countersuit heard at the same time as the Haslam suit in early January. The judge had offered this to them only if they limited their discovery to only what was necessary to defend themselves on the push-down accounting suit.

This Axios article has links to PDFs of both the original Haslam lawsuit and the Berkshire counter suit / response. The links in the article are through the words "sued Berkshire" and "a countersuit". The pdf documents can be downloaded for free by clicking "original document PDF" in the upper right corner at each link.

The primary source material is always more interesting than a bunch of press accounts in my opinion.
