How the right aims to scuttle border talks
System normal, operating as the right wing likes it to, so they get elected.
<snip>Senate negotiators are nearing agreement on a border security proposal as optimism rises about the chances of notching a deal as part of a national security supplemental that includes aid to Ukraine, Israel and the Indo-Pacific.
Negotiators are trying to finalize a deal that is expected to include changes to the amnesty and parole systems to stem the flow of migrants to the border.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said negotiators are “very close” and the Senate is “likely” to consider the supplemental next week. The floor schedule is up to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), but the statements do show McConnell’s optimism.
Senate Republicans, however, face a hard-right faction of the party and conservative media ecosystem that are trying to scuttle any deal before it’s even announced. A campaign by influential conservatives that includes misinformation, public pressure and behind-the-scenes lobbying aims to get House Republicans to oppose any deal the Senate reaches.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has sided with the hard-liners on the issue as he comes under increasing pressure to resist any Senate deal. Border security is an easier issue for Johnson to appease his detractors on as he’s likely to again defy the right by passing a short-term government funding bill with the support of Democrats to keep the government open past Friday.

The emerging Senate package is expected to raise the bar for asylum-seekers to come to the U.S., grant additional powers to remove migrants to control the border and restrict the use of parole to admit certain migrants as they await processing for their cases

Then you'd understand why the deal is a non-starter.

*Taxpayer funded lawyers
*5,000 migrants allowed in the US PER DAY (Thats's 150k/month)
So it freezes the current flood at the border. Does that sound like something the GOP would support?

Crap. I was actually starting to get hopeful. Actual legislation that albaby so patiently explained that was needed was actually at hand. So much bipartisanship on display on TV, but if the crap above stays in there with Mike Johnson's backing then another head will role in the speakers office.

“To those who think that if President Trump wins, which I hope he does, that we can get a better deal — you won’t,” Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., told reporters Wednesday.
So, Dope, nothing gets done then. You see I would pass something that changed things, even though I didn't get what I want. Then I would work to get more of what I want, while looking to see how well what we passed worked. You, on the other hand, are a boat anchor - and we go nowhere.

And some Republicans were even more direct, suggesting that any deal should be rejected if it could bolster President Joe Biden’s standing ahead of November.
“Let me tell you, I’m not willing to do too damn much right now to help a Democrat and to help Joe Biden’s approval rating,” Rep. Troy Nehls, a Texas Republican, told CNN. “I will not help the Democrats try to improve this man’s dismal approval ratings. I’m not going to do it. Why would I? Chuck Schumer has had HR 2 on his desk since July. And he did nothing with it.”

Then this guy should STFU. We have the best chance in decades right now at some meaningful legislation and we don't need idiots like him poisoning the bipartisanship.

You're so full of it your eyes are brown.
Not a single one of you has offered ANY kind of compromise with respect to security or tightening things up. Or closing loopholes. Not a one.
And yet in your mind, the GOP are the intransigent ones who are soooooooo unreasonable.
Give me a break. Do you think that in the real world that "negotiation" means you get 100% of what you want and the other side gets zero?

<snip>DEC 12 White House open to new border expulsion law, mandatory detention and increased deportations in talks with Congress
The Biden administration on Tuesday indicated to congressional lawmakers that it would be willing to support a new border authority to expel migrants without asylum screenings, as well as a dramatic expansion of immigration detention and deportations, to convince Republicans to back aid to Ukraine, four people familiar with the matter told CBS News.
The White House informed Senate Democrats that it could back those sweeping and hardline immigration policy changes as part of the negotiations over President Biden's emergency funding request, a roughly $100 billion package that includes military aid to Israel, Taiwan and Ukraine, as well as money to bolster border enforcement and hire additional immigration officials.<snip>
This is back in December, but it sure indicates a willingness to compromise in areas of security, tightening things up, and closing loopholes. Maybe you need to rethink you positions? Maybe you should not join in scuttling this until you've thought it through?

Good for them. This is called "Positive movement" and it's never how democrats roll. Because again, you people always think you're entitled to 100% of what you want and the other side can pound sand.
Ask Reagan how that went.

Oh, did I take a position on this? Or are you merely ass-u-ming something?
When the legislation comes out, and we see what's in it, then I'll take a position. But there is no way that your party can be trusted to do the right thing, ever.

One concern I have is implementing whatever deal is made. I am anxious to see what safeguards are built into the legislation.
Money to Ukraine will flow and be gone before you know it. Immigration and Border reforms, even with bipartisan cooperation, will takes years to roll out. The dems may lose interest after Ukraine is taken care of. Don't want to repeat Reagan's mistake of goodies now, security later that never comes.

Oh wait, you're serious?
More than a handful of republicans have said it's H.R. 2 or it's nothing. All or nothing. And they've threatened to vacate the chair if Johnson does not back them. At the same time, Speaker Johnson is meeting with Trump who has urged him not to negotiate on immigration.

Johnson is wrong in the first sentence. They aren't "illegals". They are asylum applicants. Nothing illegal about that, as albaby has explained exhaustively.
The work permits were one of two options to get people off of assistance, the other being funding more courts and judges. I'll take either one.
I agree with the other poster that any change by Congress is likely to be an improvement. I'm sure it has stuff both sides don't like, but that's the nature of compromise to address a problem. The fact that they are negotiating is a huge improvement. Likely both extremes are stamping their feet and holding their breath, but the right extreme seems to have outsized power in these things.

I haven’t seen much of anything in the proposal that Republicans would want. Have you?

Clearly some Republicans, or there wouldn't be a deal anywhere near the table. Perhaps not you or Mike Johnson. McConnell clearly is optimistic.
I suspect the first line in the OP appeals to them, and is maybe worth a compromise on the second bullet point to get the first.
