The U.S. contribution was part of a larger, coordinated international aid package totaling nearly $50 billion, which also included support from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Mexico was required to pledge its oil export revenues as collateral for the U.S. loan in 1995, and the country fully repaid the loan with interest by January 1997, three years ahead of schedule.
