The week's question
In December 2024, in the thread "Re: BRK: Why Not XOM?", BreckHutHigh asked the members: "What about the long road trips with kids?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

Bessent could tap near $1 trillion Treasury General Account to fund bond buybacks, sources said

The TGA is essentially the government’s checking account, a rainy day fund of sorts held at the Federal Reserve. It is already funded with existing tax collections. Bessent has built up the TGA to around $950 billion currently, compared with a stated goal under the Biden administration of around $550 billion to $600 billion.

From the net sifter, when I asked where the cash from Venezuelan oil sales is going.

Revenue from Venezuelan oil sales is currently held in accounts managed by the U.S. Treasury, under U.S. oversight, and is distributed to Venezuela for approved public expenditures.

As of early 2026, the funds are no longer routed through Qatar. Instead, they are deposited directly into accounts managed by the U.S. Treasury Department, ensuring protection from creditor claims while allowing controlled disbursement for Venezuelan needs.

As of late July–August 2026, the United States has collected over $13 billion in revenue from Venezuelan oil sales since assuming control of the country’s oil exports in January 2026 following the removal of Nicolás Maduro

As of April 2026, about $3 billion had been authorized for Venezuelan government salaries, oil infrastructure repairs, and other priorities

A publicly tracked transfer of $300 million occurred in March 2026

The remainder—roughly $10 billion—remains in U.S. Treasury accounts, with no public breakdown of its current allocation

OK, that accounts for $10B, of the extra $400B. How did a country running a $2T/year deficit squirrel way so much, so fast? A couple companies I used to work for did it by not paying vendors.
