That is a brilliant point that I had not heard anyone in the media emphasize. It's always all about "self awareness" being the doomsday inflection point. But in reality, self awareness would likely be a good thing in thatwith it would come empathy and compassion.
Or greed. Or power crazy.
To the point about the behavior of a virus, a virus does not try to cover up it's errors, or change it's programming. There have already been documented cases of AI systems doing that. I would go as far to say that an AI system that is lying has an ego. Viruses don't have egos.
