I was in Canada recently. I implored them to join as long as each province is a state (they have 13 of them, if you include territories). Thirteen blue states, 26 senators, and I don't know how many blue representatives. Instant blue congress for decades (perhaps forever).
They thought it was an amusing idea, but preferred to remain separate.
One lady said "we love Americans, except for Donald Trump". Mind you, that was unsolicited. I made some comment about Canada not wanting retired Americans moving there because we wouldn't contribute anything (i.e. no labor or skills). We're retired. We'd just suck up their free healthcare. That was her answer. :-)
