**Though I know a few religious people that say we're close to "end times" because things are getting "worse and worse". Except they aren't, which I point out to them every time they bring it up. People are living longer, fewer people are in poverty (as a percentage of the population), crime (especially violent crime) is near historic lows, etc. But they still insist it's getting "worse and worse".

Seems likely it is, at least in part, due to the 24 hour news outlets that are constantly trying to grab peoples attention. And fear and sensationalism work. The right wing media has really perfected this, pumping out constant 'news' full of hate and fear.
