The week's question
In December 2024, in the thread "Re: BRK: Why Not XOM?", BreckHutHigh asked the members: "What about the long road trips with kids?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

Did you mean "FSB"? Otherwise, I need to know what that acronym is.

Yes, I meant FSB. Sorry bout that.

Yes, the Russians had a lot of social media bots spreading lies about the Dem candidates (for POTUS), in hopes that the Felon would win. They continue to do so. They are exploiting the gullibility of the average American.**

Americans, or at least many Americans, have gone soft. Perhaps the softest of all are those on the right who consider their performative cruelty to be a sign of hardness and vigor. There are plenty on the left who have gone soft as well. Ease, comfort and security have become the most important values for them and they have a natural affinity toward peace and quiet, even when banging drums is called for.

But Putin -I think- believes that Americans are somewhat ignorant, and somewhat cowardly. Probably left over from his KGB days (when Soviet citizens were raised to believe that we were soft and decadent).

True. But Hitler and Tojo thought the same. They thought Americans would remain asleep, even when faced by a direct threat to their ease, security and comfort. Perhaps this time will be different. Perhaps we all just can’t be bothered and we will not be bothered as the chains tighten around our necks. Or perhaps not. Perhaps we will all wake up and perceive the threat. Who knows? That chapter remains to be written.

And Jedi, I'm NOT even saying that the Democrats, as currently constituted, will ever get us to that point. It's no longer "Libs vs Cons".

Right now it's those who stand up for democracy against those who are rushing headlong into fascism.

Absolutely. I have said many times that the country (and by extension, "democracy") comes before party. When I was a Republican, I think Dems and Reps agreed on that point...but no longer. For Dems it mostly does. For Reps, that seems to have gone away.

There are lots of Democrats and Republicans who perceive the threat and are beginning to organize and act. Will they be enough? Or in time?

Again, that chapter remains to be written, but I know for certain- it won’t be written by those who surrender to despair.

Fuck despair. And fuck these Nazis…… I’m sure the same sentiment was expressed by Americans in foxholes 1941-45., though it would have been better if more Americans were saying it 1934-41.

**It doesn't help that a large percentage of Americans get their "news" from social media, which is a cesspool of lies and distortions. If they get something correct, it's almost by accident.

The other day, I ran across a few youtube videos that purported to narrate several encounters between Jasmine Crockett and John Roberts. In each, Crockett bested Roberts in various hearings and even one Supreme Court encounter. But as I listened to these videos (I was in my car) it became apparent that these encounters just couldn’t be true.

Sure enough, when I was in A place where I could actually do five minutes of research, it became apparent that these were fabrications created out of thin air.

Though we’ll never be able to compete with the right in the area of fabricated history, we do have our examples of political fiction.
