Why does it seem like the world is going to hell in a hand basket in my old age?

Because you don't have personal, adult, memories of the 1930s?

My dad was a native French speaker, and, living in NYC, had access to French media. He used to talk about how chaotic France was, at that time, with ruling coalitions collapsing frequently, leaving the country rudderless, until another coalition could be stitched together.

He also commented on the Communist rallies in NYC, with the subway car he was riding in, arriving at a station, and suddenly awash in people singing "The Internationale".
