Rachel Reeves is expected to cut billions from the welfare budget and other departments amid fears her Ł9.9 billion of fiscal headroom has been wiped out.
The Chancellor is reportedly plotting the “politically painful” cuts to curb Britain’s ballooning sickness and disability benefits bill at the Spring Statement later this month.
The Treasury will present its proposals to the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) to inform its official economic forecast on Wednesday.
It comes after Ms Reeves hinted that ministers will prioritise making efficiency savings over tax rises as part of the Government’s pledge to boost defence spending.
