The week's question
In December 2024, in the thread "Re: BRK: Why Not XOM?", BreckHutHigh asked the members: "What about the long road trips with kids?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

I like the corner of Berkshire and Fairfax board. I didn't know it cost $50. I think they probably gave it to the older members for free or something. There is uniquely good coverage of Fairfax Financial and Fairfax India over there. Nothing special on Berkshire, but there isn't much about Berkshire these days that isn't well covered in multiple places. There are some very good investors on the forum that post regularly and are very generous with their opinions, ideas, etc. Most of the members on that message board seem to constantly be "trimming," "adding," "starter position in xyz," etc etc - owning what sounds like 50+ to hundreds of tiny positions that are constantly being adjusted in minuscule amounts. This is almost guaranteed to underperform massively, even before the transaction costs and tax drag is factored in. Certainly there is no needle-moving conviction in any of the securities.

Like many forums, there is a ton of "group think" on COBF, where certain stocks seem to be owned by everyone on the forum at a given time. Sometimes these investments work out very well, sometimes not.

Like dealraker mentioned at some point here, there isn't really a dominant poster or two (which is probably a good thing) - there are several very regular contributors and many many less frequent contributors and always some youngsters that come around looking for ideas or help or whatever. The forum is very cordial, civil, collegial.. Not overly woke or touchy. A good sense of humor.

One good feature of the COBF forum is that you can post files, images without links, etc.. - which I don't think you can do on this forum unless you have a link.
