Jim: the glowing narrative of Mr Abel's skills is not particularly well supported by the financial results...For a really bullish case...

palmersq: The question is whether the assumptions required for Berkshire to generate meaningful outperformance

Another questions are a)whether Abel needs exceptional skills and b)whether Berkshire needs to outperform. And to those questions there is not one answer as it depends on the reasons why one invests in Berkshire. I am absolutely content as long as fortress Berkshire

- longterm provides a modest return, say >=5% after inflation

- and belongs in Warren´s category of "Invest in companies who even an idiot at the helm won´t break" (I don´t remember what exactly he said; neither I am saying Abel is one)

So that I know if the stock market closes tomorrow as long as the US/World doesn´t go down the drain I won´t be bankrupt when it opens in 5 years again.
