Because of climate change, their range is expanding (there has been Dengue in FL...normally that is a tropical disease). Malaria deaths are up for the first time in decades. New breeds of mosquitoes are surviving in urban environments better. Basically, they're winning.
DDT has some catastrophic side-effects, but it worked. I always go back and forth on that one. Could we have all but eliminated them, and then stopped using it before too much damage was done? I know damage was being done, which is why they banned it. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. :-(
