It's why I had studiously avoided that board after a very early and brief acquaintance.

And this board is a horror show, with the sane voices talking articulately to the choir. The others are lost causes.

It is so unfortunate, so sad. So sad.

The thing about Rush Limbaugh's snark was that I only heard it when I was in the car, and only for as long as it took to feel know what his daily spew would be... then push the button and poof.

In the meantime, if I want to scope out the MAGAt side, I can click on Fox News, then click it off when after one cycle of what Bannon so aptly titles a 'zone flooded with sh!t.' Poof, gone for the day, or until I want to take a morbid peek at alt-fact side of aisle.

Today, for instance, Fox leads with a story about 2 'mothers being sued by a high school librarian for defamation after they attacked her at a school board hearing, calling the librarian "child predator" and "accused her of "luring children with pornography."

It's alarming how tactic right-wing extremists increasingly go after the employees of things to which they object.

Just a question from somebody who doesn't follow this board (Only saw this thread from the "Best of" feature), and is not really familiar with the "Big American Divide" as I call it (Left vs. Right), is just sad that he sees such more and more in the countries where he lives (Germany and New Zealand):

I used to love debating and discussing police in my teen years in the 90's. Heck even now - I can same perhaps 98 out of 100 Senators, and something pertinen about them from back in those days. Today - it's been years since I watched political news and I could probably name 25-30/100 senators. While politics was always a contact sport - you are RIGHT ON the internet made us all brave keyboard warriors and as luck would have it, much of this started during Bush v Gore 2000----so the new bloggers, chatters, all of us had this medium.

Also, technology made it easy for an already self segregating America, to really truly marry themselves to their own political silo, or ghetto if you will. Changing socioeconomic situations and fortunes - and lack of a common culture, belief, language, etc really turned the melting pot into a mosaic and it's not just racial. All these things turned America into tribes and castes -- only it's not official yet because we're only 250-ish years old. Give it time -- it will happen.

On TMF I used to predict all the time that political violence will be normal and daily in America. Assassination attempts between congressional campaigns. Citizen vs Citizen. It's happening now - and it's only a few steps from being normalized --- the mass shootings are taking that place first.

BigPicture wise- the texting, smartphones, social media, likes, have absolutely robbed people of some humanity. Eye contact, touch, reasoning, body language - is going. The video games I played as a kid - were about Mario saving the princess and whacking a few dragons. No "grand theft auto", no expert gun skills being taught. While rock and roll was always Risque - wagging our fingers, getting tattoos, bobbing our heads and saying "bitch" and using a certain urban accent to argue and then get violent over French fry orders wasn't normal - it is now - YouTube it. People are losing humanity.

Now get ready for the true fun. A.I. Which yes, will benefit many of the well educated and well heeled that populate mediums like this. But in parts of America NOT seen by the Bubble People here.... you think they are mad now? Wait till more jobs are lost. Wait till A.I becomes household...and robs people of even MORE humanity.

A lifelong surfer, I'm acquainted with a few New Zealand surfers who look upon Maori with the same disdain as some US surfers do with LatinX. My Mom was born in Berlin. She migrated to the US in '37. Now 92, she's acutely aware that anti-semitism in Germany remained strong. Fortunately for NZ and Germany, they aren't swamped with high capacity/rapid firing weapons as we are.

In part, yes. What you're seeing here is a spillover of rivalries from an older message board.

I know you're just being snarky because there is no left-wing equivalence to the intentional partisan lying of Rush Limbaugh or Tucker Carlson. The right wing market for that crap is vast. The right-wing's gullibility and it's appetite for outrage media is simply not matched on the left side of the audience aisle.

Several of the graylings with whom you swap recs boast frequently about the size of the right-wing audience being unmatched, as if the size of the audience is an indicator of the media's honesty. Fine but please consider two suggestions.

Simply name the board "Political Discussions". Avoid the taint of naming it the same as the old TMF swamp.

Do not banish it to the Halls of Shrewd'm gulag. I thought Halls was for new boards to be created to see if they attract enough activity they would be moved to the main board. As has been acknowledged, Atheists is dominated by the large number of Political Posts. I think the popularity of politics has earned a spot on the main board.

If it really is only a temporary limbo area for new boards, then I agree that both "Atheist Shrewds" and "Political Discussion" should graduate from that limbo area. I also agree with BHM that it shouldn't be pre-tainted with the 'Asylum' designation.

PS - adding the 'Shrewds' designation to any board name seems redundant to me. After all, ALL these boards are on this Shrewdm site by design!

My mistake. Halls of Shrewdom is a grouping within the main board. I was confusing it with the Outskirts board which is a separate board serving as a proving ground for new boards that may or may not attract a sufficient following for the main stage. Unlike the main board, you cannot see the various outskirt boards unless you specifically go there.

IMHO, "paradise" would involve someone who knows what they're doing, not a virgin. ;-)

"Popularity"?

Personally, I hate politics. Always have. I only get involved because I have to (voting, etc), and because I want to know what other people are thinking. Usually it's wrong-headed ("you will not replace us!"), but sometimes I learn something important. I wish everything would work as it should, that senators aren't in the pockets of big donors, and such like that. But it doesn't. So I have to pay attention.

I think separating politics won't really help much. On TMF, the AF board was mostly about politics. We also discussed cooking/recipes, philosophy (especially benjd25), history, science...but a lot of politics. The cool thing is that we had a diversity of people. Some theists, mostly atheists, a few gay persons, right wing, left wing...everyone was welcome as long as they kept it civil. If I may be a bit arrogant, we were the smart PA board. Lots of meaty discussions.

If we mostly ban other topics, this board will die. Posts like "yep, there's still no reason to believe there's a god" will get really boring really fast.

Politics? It is a fine word and a fine topic. Would you prefer "Current Events"? or maybe "Current Events so long as the topic can't impact on government policy or elections".

Seems like that exclusion would shield someone from any knowledge of what may be coming that could impact them, their safety, their prosperity, their freedoms. There are a lot of people who hide from politics. I mostly feel sorry them being so detached, but maybe they are the smart ones in actuality, ignorance is bliss has some truth to it. My only problem with detached people is many still vote, and usually pull the Dem handle because the purple haired activist with the nose ring who registered them told them to vote that way. The certainly can't arrive at an informed decision to vote D without exposing themselves to the dreaded "Politics".

No, I don't have a problem with the word. I was commenting on the word "popularity". Do people really enjoy talking politics? Or do they do it out of a feeling of necessity? For me, it's the latter. We're in a democracy, so we have to worry about it. An uninformed (or misinformed) populace will doom democracy (as we are seeing).
