Fauci is not a lawyer, and a line of questioning that is opened by answering a seemingly innocuous question, no longer falls under the protection of the 5th..... as I understand it.
You may well be right, but all Fauci would have had to do is to stop at an answer of "blue" or "Thursday" to establish good faith and then invoke the 5th for any potentially incriminating follow-ups. I wouldn't think a lawyer's expertise is needed for that. On the other hand, Fauci's main lawyer - David Schertler - had been ejected by that point so he couldn't even consult him (though I think there were also several other lawyers of his present..)
