If you want a rigorous and detailed, (sometimes way too much detail) on the likely origin story of life on earth, I refer you to "The Vital Question" by Nick Lane. It is not exhaustive, but lays out supported hypotheses for many of the necessary steps for formation of biomolecules and how their aggregation can lead to further complexity. Some steps in the development remain as yet unknown.
It is NOT explainable by the oft fallacious straw man of rattling atoms around for a billion years and voila --LIFE! It is in the nature of the periodic table of elements; some elements hydrophobic, some hydrophilic; some charged positive and some negative with varying electric potential; different affinities for bonding, covalent vs ionic; for them to assemble into biomolecules. The first evidence of life was a billion years into earth's history. Multicellular life did not show up for another 2 billion years.
It took me two years to plow through. The most startling thing I learned that life did not arise only once, but twice. Bacteria and Archaea are biochemically and fundamentally distinct. But all multicellular organisms derive from the symbiosis of bacteria in the form mitochondria and our host cells that derive from archaea.
