the concept is to own nearly every step and drive the margin of the end product to commodity-type profit for dominance.

Irrational. Interesting idea at first, but the practicality is China lacks the resources and the technical capability to create, manage, and deliver in all areas. I could see 5-8 areas, but once beyond that point, the demands of each desired targeted area would overwhelm their ability to properly manage them all to deliver the desired products. They are essentially trying to "Jack Welch" their economy--when it so obviously failed with GE (and many other companies).
