I guess the follow-up question is, would they be able to persist without U.S. support? Do they need the U.S. in order to maintain their security?
I tend to doubt it. As Hitchens once said, it's the only piece of land with no oil. They don't have a thriving industrial base. Not much agriculture. What could they sell to raise money for the weapons they need? (serious question...I'm unaware of anything)
Which should make them a little more contrite when dealing with people on whom they depend.
If they can fund and equip their IDF, they'll be fine. But I don't know how they do that without us giving them billions every year.
