Berkshire Hathaway, where Buffett is CEO, is sitting on about a $5 billion paper loss on the Occidental holding, which totals 265 million shares, or a 28% stake in the big energy company, Barron’s estimates.
Occidental shares were down 1.7% to $35.49 on Wednesday as U.S. crude oil prices fell another $3 a barrel to $57, compared with $70 in late March. Barron’s estimates that Berkshire’s cost basis in its Occidental holding is around $53 a share, based largely on publicly disclosed purchases since Berkshire began buying the stock in 2022.>
