Michigan collects significantly more tax revenue from gambling than it does from marijuana sales. In 2025, Michigan's booming iGaming and online sports betting market generated over $590 million in tax revenue. Conversely, marijuana sales tax—while substantial—generate roughly $300 million annually, with early 2026 figures showing shortfalls on road-funding projections.
If being high makes people more prone to gamble, the state gets a twofer. Then there are the "JCs". Weed is still a highly fragmented business in the state, unlike gambling, which is pushed by global companies.
