The week's question
In December 2024, in the thread "Re: BRK: Why Not XOM?", BreckHutHigh asked the members: "What about the long road trips with kids?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

All the folks cheering on Canada as they want to have it both ways? You don’t know what they do.

Apparently you’re on Chapter 23 of the “It’s Always The Other Guy’s Fault” book.

Prior to 2025, and in spite of the Free Trade Agreement between the US and Canada, the United States often put tariffs on specific Canadian products after complaints by domestic producers, or by general consensus in the Congress.

Some of those included:

Softwood imports. (Lumber)
Steel.
Aluminum.
Paper products.
Certain chemicals.
Certain biologics.

Additionally, there is a list of agricultural products which were on-again/off-again tariffed by the US based on complaints from the ag industry and/or farmer groups. Although most were permitted tariff free, there was a continuing cat/mouse game depending on the economic vicissitudes of affected groups in the US, and the Congress and regulators were only too happy to play to those rural concerns.

All of this, I emphasize, is prior to 2025 - and during the period of “free trade” treaties - so none of it is in retaliation for Trump’s latest clomping around like a blind man in a porcelain shop. The US has played the game at least as well, so as usual, you have been led into the Victimhood Parade and are ready to audition for Grand Marshall.
