I've only cleaned my filter out a couple of times over the year that I've had it, but there was really nothing in it. Meaning I did what they suggested but it wasn't needed, except to have a sparkly clean filter.

I think they tell you to regularly clean so they cover their behinds.

Depends, too, on how you rinse or don't rinse your dishes--but I would never say never check the filter. That could potentially be yucky. So you know, get the feel for it and do what works.
