Sooner or later, won't the availability of Canadian oil become part of the conversation ?
Trump's calculus is always that the counterparty needs him, more than he needs the counterparty. He says it over and over: he doesn't care if they reach a "deal" with Iran, or not, while insisting Iran is desperate. He also says, over and over, in public, he doesn't care what the Prole's cost of living is. It's all about being a big shot, beating up on others.
So, does the US need Canadian crude, more than Canada needs the revenue? Canada does not have means to ship most of it's production elsewhere. Meanwhile, Trump said, out loud, last winter, the US has first dibs on Venezuelan crude. He is also upset that US big oil is not stampeding in to Venezuela and dramatically increasing production.
