Based on what has been published, his mom saying he had become more pro-gay and pro-trans, this could be all about the kid attacking a person he saw as stirring up hate against his partner. No broad political agenda at all. Entirely personal.

That looks more and more likely.

Throw in a bit of withdrawal from the actual world and a bit too much time with online, apolitical trolls whose only orgasms seem to come by encouraging others to harm themselves or others……

There really are people in this world whose excitement comes from watching people punish themselves or others.
