The week's question
In December 2024, in the thread "Re: BRK: Why Not XOM?", BreckHutHigh asked the members: "What about the long road trips with kids?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

Using Fake/Borrowed SSNs: Some undocumented workers obtain jobs by using fake or borrowed Social Security numbers (SSNs). While these funds go into the Social Security system, they are credited to the owner of the number, not the undocumented immigrant.
Important to note:
Ineligible for Benefits: Despite paying into the system, undocumented immigrants are generally not eligible to receive Social Security benefits.
Net Positive Effect: Because they pay taxes but rarely collect benefits, undocumented immigrants have a net positive effect on the Social Security Trust Fund's solvency.

That is correct. And has been the case for decades. Just one of the ways they are a benefit to the people of the USA.

From that standpoint, I can't complain. But, as a matter of ethics, it is unfair. Just as it is unfair they have no redress for grievances regarding their treatment (because if they go to the authorities, they likely will be detained and deported). Which is why we need an overhaul of the system that includes guest/migrant worker visas. I believe sano has said that we had such a program in the 50s, but it went away.
