Current law requires a president to give Congress a 30 day notice before firing an IG. Obviously, that was not met in this case.

A couple of interesting observations.

-The firings were not announced until after Hegseth was confirmed. Would announcing the firings before the confirmation was final have influenced one more Senator to vote against confirmation?

-Does this particular Congress care? Obviously, slightly less than half of each house will care deeply. But it will likely take at least some GOP members to also care to make any difference.

-What are the consequences of failing to meet the 30 day requirement? It's probably buried in the actual text of the law, but its too late at night for me to be reading law. Chapter and verse are cited in the CRS report.
